Privacy Issues of Social Networking Sites

Have you ever wonder there are so many people signing up to Bebo, Facebook, Flickr, Friends Reunited, LinkedIn, MySpace, Windows Live Spaces and YouTube, BUT.. Since then, privacy issues have incurred from all these social networking sites. It cant be denied that there are many security issues surrounding websites in general and specifically social networking sites – For this time, I have only highlighted the issues that I found relating to privacy and data security.

(image obtained from http://www.boston.com)

Many social networking sites are commercial enterprises owned by large, multinational organisations such as Yahoo! or Google. Many people believe ‘Tom’ to have started MySpace, but it was actually created by a company called eUniverse.

Google famously bought YouTube in October year 2006, paying a staggering US Dollar $1.65bn – but why? Have you ever wonder? And YEAh! It’s all about data and it seems like Google have tonnes of it on its users, but Google never deletes data collected on its users and some day in the future, the day may come when it could make billions and billions from flogging it.

(image obtained from http://info.scrapur.com)

Sites such as Facebook and MySpace say that they find it reasonable to collect and store personal information about users such as occupation, gender and personal interests in order to ‘maximise your enjoyment’ of their sites. Facebook quite eerily states that it may also search for information about you on blogs, newspapers and instant messaging services. Why on earth should they feel that this is appropriate? So that you can enjoy a more personalised service, apparently. Personally, I think that’s a bit much and would not in any way agree to this – but millions of people have done, by signing up to use Facebook, as this privacy encroachment forms part of the privacy policy that all users have to agree to having read and abide by when signing up.

(image obtained from www.hillsidebschool.com)

Accepting Google’s privacy policy forms part of signing up to use YouTube and it’s another one that’s keen to improve your user experience – ‘We may combine personal information collected from you with information from other Google services or third parties to provide a better user experience’.

Yahoo! is another big corporate with social networking interests in the form of Flickr, the popular photo-sharing website. Its privacy terms state that ‘Once you register with Yahoo! and sign in to our services, you are not anonymous to us.’ It also plays the ‘user experience’ card and goes on to say that it uses personal data for three purposes – content customisation, ‘to fulfill your requests for certain products and services’ (whatever that may mean) and to flog you stuff.

So people out there, BEWARE!! As you are signing up for any Social Networking Sites, Please bear in mind to read the policy or terms and conditions. You don't wanna see your pictures to be in some advertisement someday out there without you knowing it! @.@

Signing Off,

Justin

Link to us: http://snipurl.com/ub6oc

A
microblogging site that stands as a rival to the famous, Twitter. It is known as Plurk. Created by The A-team, it was launched on May 12, 2008. Ever since it’s launching, it has been successful to date. It has a vast growing group of fans from the Southeast Asia region, (over 31% Plurk traffic comes from Taiwan, where as over 29% comes from the Southeast Asia region).

According to Akan (1/7 of The A-team), Plurk is an etymological deconstruction of the word you love to hate.

He goes on explaining that; (1) Plurk = People + Lurk, (2) Play + Work, (3) The Acronym = People, Love, Unity, Respect, Karma, and (4) It could be a verb potential, for example how Google is used as a word, “Oh, I googled it!” / “Oh, I plurked it!”.

The view of each profile is seen as a timeline that would be updated with random status updates by the Plurk members. Other Plurk members are allowed to comment on the updates that could lead to a chat log. JavaScript is used for the scrollable timeline to be written on, where as it is renewed through AJAX.

The A-team.

More to come in the next chapter ; Twitter vs Plurk. Which would prevail to become the Future in microblogging?

Followers are on the way.

Twitter has become a new hit! Do you know? The actor Ashton Kutcher has million followers when he became the first account holder!

Photobucket

Do you want people to follow you? Well, there are actually tactics to use to become more famous in Twitter World. Imagine no one follow you even you've been updated your status every single minute? Does it make a difference?

1) A good profile picture
Having a nice profile picture does make a difference, your avatar is either appear you as someone who has personality or someone who is lame to keep updating their status without any purposes. Make sure you upload a photo with a file size of at least 450 x 450 pixel. You wouldn't want your followers click your picture with a result of pixelization. Remember, a picture speaks thousand words!

2) Make an interesting bio of yourself
Unless you are as famous as celebrity, create a bio which represent yourself in 160 characters is an effective way to attract follower. Keep it short and simple, yet creative and catchy so that someone would be interested in you. For example: My name is xxx, age 18, students, from KL. Would you follow this person?

3) Share good site
A good website that provides collection of links to the most breaking, unusual and coolest on the Internet able to retain their users or readers. As a Twitter's user, knowing how to update your status such as you gonna hit to gym or you are having BigMac is not a good way to attract followers. Spend more time on surfing any sites which people might get interested in the topic you share with. You will also become a reliable resources which can retain your regular followers.

4) Share picture!
Everyone likes to look at picture, visual normally works! Share a picture of you've found, or yourself to update your status instead of using words only. If you have I-phone even greater, you can upload pictures wherever you are by using Tweetie.

5) Advertise your account
The only way to get recognition on your account is to keep promoting. Post it on your Facebook! Post it in your blog! Put it under your MSN status! You can even include your link under e-mail signature. There are ways to do it, it just the matters of whether you want to do it or not.

With these few tricks, I hope you guys learn something and start your own Twitter now!!!

Cheers,
LiHui =)

Weekly Poll 3 Result: Do You Like New Friendster?

The question was asked to survey whether will the new Friendster be accepted and regain their its member? And the answer is obvious... Most of them doubt and answered MAYBE.. 4 out of 14 respondents answered NO while only 1 out of 14 respondents gave positive feedback which is YES! I guess there are several reasons why New Friendster couldn't once again gain its popularity..

Look at Facebook and MySpace.. their members had exceeded Friendster million miles away. This might due to the members being loyalty and not willing to even take a look at the New Friendster.

Since it took off in 2001, Friendster has been outshined by Facebook and Myspace over the years. But now... I guess its a No! No! Nine years down the road with its new looks, Friendster has developed many new features.

Friendster has definitely changed its looks; (1) the interface is much more structured with an Activity Stream that allows updates, comments and adding friends, (2) a redesigned About Me section showing a larger version of the primary photo, (3) Shoutout Stream has been added, (4) users are able to change their primary color of their home page by clicking a colored box on a user panel on the top right side.

But there's still hope because most respondents answered MAYBE?? Why not you, take a look and explore the New Frienster @ http://www.friendster.com/ and tell me why?

Just a simple report,

Justin =)

Sites like Facebook and Myspace provide the users to build their profiles, integrate useful programs in their homepage. But Twitter makes a difference! One web company with a simple service is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about social networking site.

Photobucket
(image obtained from http://computer.howstuffworks.com/web-site-pictures.htm)

So what does Twitter do? It allows the users to broadcast messages to a network of contacts. Instead of sending an e-mails or text messages, one Tweet provides everything! Users send quick update to let their "followers" to know what is going on in real-time. Once users have an account in Twitter, they can invite other users to receive their Tweets. On the other hand, Tweets have limitations as it allows you to send a short messages limited to just 140 characters to avoid heavy traffic. Well, people update their status so frequently that is unnecessary to send a long message.

The most interesting feature in Twitter is users are able to "follow" whoever they want to receive the first hand news! Even top celebrities are using Twitter every second to keep in touch with their fans. Don't you think we are so lucky to have Twitter in this century?

Well, I personally love Twitter! Guess what? Even Obama & Bill Gates are using Twitter! Get yourself a Tweet before you are out of touch from the world!

Weekly Poll 2 ; Which element is the most important in considering a S.N.S ?

Link to us: http://snipurl.com/u8g6e

<span class=

<span class=
For Week 2, we came up with a poll question that focused on the importance of an element in a Social Networking Site, and we gave several choices to choose from. Here are the results that we have collected from our readers. Thank you for your participation. Much appreciated.

Design, Community, Media, Application and Ease of use were given as an answer of choice to our readers. With 30% of the votes, Ease of use was stated as the most important element that our readers would like to have on a social networking site. 25% was given to the Application element, where as 20% went to the Design element as voted by our readers. For the remaining 25%, the Community element receives 15% and the Media element as the lowest with 10% of the votes.

Frequent social networking users, clearly would prefer the advantage of an easy to use site. Personally, I am an avid Facebook user, I would most definitely want an easy to use S.N.S that would allow me to save time as I browse through either writing wall messages to my friends or playing the Interactive games that are provided by Zynga games. The Application element is quite important, from my point of view as it would allow us to be aware of all the application that are already in our social networking site compared to just adding and deleting upon usage.

The Design element works with every individual user to the social networking site but it focuses on the liking of a big group of users. The Community and Media element are a vast topic to discuss on as they are both quite important to a Social Networking Site, I believe so. They conjure up the daily working operation of the S.N.S. The users are the Community element, where as the Media element is to up hold the interactivity of the site.

At the end of the day, each of these elements have an important role in a social networking site and it is up to us as users to make use of it, the right way and of course, the ethical way. As my co-editor wrote previously, technology is moving rapidly, mostly the Internet world. So best keep your head in the game, before you get left behind.

Facebook Vs MySpace (2)

Link to us: http://snipurl.com/u86nf
Once Again... thanks for visiting SNS- 101.

Photobucket

(image obtained from www.static.desktopnexus.com)

This week brings to the part two of Facebook versus MySpace. Well, I guess most of you wanna know who's the boss right? The part two of Facebook Vs MySpace will discuss about the two key elements which are Usefulness and Ease of Use in social networking sites. After that, you will get to know whos the overall winner of this two popular Social networking sites~!

Let's get the race started!

Photobucket
(image obtained from www.cartuningscentral.com)

Round 4: Usefulness
Finding Old Friends: It can't be denied that one of the major reasons for joining a social network is to reconnect with old friends or classmates. Facebook makes this really easy because the whole site is organized by schools and now by locations too. So unless you forgot your friends name you will probably be able to find them if they have an account. MySpace lets you search for school friends, but doesn’t put the emphasis on real friendships.

Communication: Facebook is definitely a good way to contact people if you don’t know their contact info. You can send an email thru it or even use the Facebook chat to find out whether your friend is online. Besides that, if uyou were to have an events, Facebook makes it easy when you can invite them and put down important info. Hence, someone is more likely to notice a Facebook message than a MySpace Message due to the fact that there is less Facebook spam.

Promoting Yourself: MySpace wins here. Thousands of bands use MySpace to promote their music and their fans use it to show their support. This isn’t nearly as evident on Facebook, although groups allow companies to promote themselves. But Facebook is slowly improving as there are more and more Fans Page.. =) you can even create for your own.. I wonder whether my coursemate helped me to creat a Justin's Fans Page? @.^
Round Winner: Its a TIE!

The fight continues with....
Final Round: Ease of use
Photobucket
(image obtained from www.bathstudent.com)

Adding Friends: MySpace wins here because adding new friends and accepting friends requests is usually a one click process. The major advance here over Facebook is the ability to add large amounts of friends at once which for some reason was never added to Facebook.

Search: The winner here is a little bit surprising when you consider Google does the search for the loser. Facebook’s search beats MySpace by a mile. Even though the search engine giant Google is providing MySpace’s search, its results are not nearly as useful as Facebook’s. The big issue here is that MySpace’s search looks in the whole profile, even when just looking for a person, Facebook’s is smart enough to know if you are looking for a user or a movie in someone’s interests.

Navigation: Both MySpace and Facebook have pretty decent navigation, but Facebook beats MySpace when it comes to getting to specific people’s profiles due to its superior search.

Privacy: You can choose who to show your infos and who not to show, Facebook makes it really easy to hide info from certain people and to not show information that you want to be kept private. So, if you only want you close friends to see you contact info, it only takes a second. MySpace has privacy too, but it’s far less granular.

Round Winner: Facebook!
An the Winner is… Facebook!!

The Revival of Friendster.

Welcome back…. Friendster!

As one of the pioneering social networking sites in the internet to date has been bought over, transformed and remodeled with a completely new agenda and hopes of overpowering the other social networking sites back to the ground to collect back its number 1 spot. According to a website, TechCrunch, it is said that Friendster claims that the redesign of the entire website intends to highlight on 3 pillars; Simple, Fun and Personal.

An online payment-collection firm, MOL Global has successfully bought over 100% of Friendster Inc. As rumor has it, it is to create “Asia’s largest end-to-end content, distribution and commerce network.” In the official press release, the existing Friendster Wallet and Friendster Gift Shop will be looked upon to advance their services for Friendster’s loyal consumers.

(image obtained ; http://www.techcrunch.com)
With its major revamp, Friendster has created a new logo; with a tagline (“Connecting Smiles”) and a brand new fresh look.

Since it took off in 2001, Friendster has been outshined by Facebook and Myspace over the years. Although Friendster may no longer be hot in the United States, it most definitely still is a big hit in the Asia/Pacific region. Richard Kimber, Friendster’s newly appointed CEO (previously under Google, as Head Sales and Operations in South East Asia).

Not forgetting its brand new interactivity features and applications; (1) there’s a Gift Shop that allows users to buy and send gifts, (2) a Treasure Chest is where gifts received are displayed, (3) a collection of online pet games and casual games known as Friendster Games, (4) Friendster Chips known as virtual money, stored for games and future purchases through the Friendster Wallet, (5) users can reload their Friendster Wallets at a 7-Eleven by buying a Top-up card.

Weekly Poll - Which social networking site do you prefer?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Last week, we came up with a poll to do a survey on which social networking site do you prefer. Now, the result is out. Thanks for everyone participation! =)

The given choices include Facebook, Friendster, My Space, Twitter and others sites. As the pie chart above shown, the most voted social networking site is Facebook! Obviously, Facebook did made an impact in today's society. The second most voted social networking site is Myspace. This is why our previous post talked about Facebook vs. Myspace. Well, different users have different needs, and Facebook and Myspace do provide different features to the users. Next rated social networking site is Twitter. Twitter is actually just as famous as Facebook, I bet all of us, came across the "follow me button" with a little cute bird icon right? People often use Twitter to follow thier favourite celebrities, friends etc. Lastly, the least rated social networking site is Friendster. I'm sure everyone knows that Friendster used to be like Facebook, who did not have an account in Friendster before? I think everyone did right?

In conclusion, the analysis is just to find out which social networking site people prefer the most? Technology is moving rapidly, especially the Internet world. Who knows another creative social networking site will be soon launched in few months later? Well, we'll see...

p/s: Is time for LiHui to get back to her S.N.S world!

Facebook Vs MySpace (1)

I always wonder how is the battle between Mark and Tom? Whose inventions are better? Facebook by Mark Zuckerberg or MySpace by Tom Anderson. Well, this week, bring to you a close up battle between Facebook and MySpace Part 1. I will be revealing this week three rounds of versus(s) between this two top rated Social Networking Sites.

Quick Fact- Facebook is currently having 150 million members while MySpace is having 191 million members. (Selfgrowth.com)

Photobucket
(image obtained from www.broadbandevolved.com)

Round 1: Design

Layout: Indeniable, MySpace wins in this segment. According to www.techcrunch.com's Facebook Poll, only 5% of the nearly 800,000 respondents give the new layout of Facebook a thumbs up while rest go the other way. And MySpace offers layout design utilities which let users select options and preview what their page will look like.

Photobucket
(image obtained from www.biojobblog.com)

Profiles: Draw. Because MySpace has a lot of customizations, but Facebook’s default looks better than MySpace’s and it’s very neat and well organized.
Customization: MySpace and Facebook tie here. Facebook lets you add and remove applications, while MySpace lets you do whatever you want with the pages, only if you know a little HTML. Unfortunately thats the reason MySpace’s design is kinda messy and unorganized.

Site Organization: Both are quite organized. However, Facebook wins because of its clean layout that allows you to find everything right away, and it’s homepage is a link to everything you need in neat and tidy boxes.

Overall Site Design: Facebook is the winner for this round. MySpace might tend to look a little unprofessionally when compared to Facebook, mainly again because of it’s inconsistency in design. This time I guess its MySpace themselves, not the users, who make the site difficult to use.

Round Winner: *drum rolls* .....Its a DRAW!

Round 2: Media

Photobucket
(image obtained from www.
vsteonline.ning.com)

Pictures: Facebook wins!! Don't you like it when you don't have to bring your own camera and all you have to do is to have a friend who owns a camera and a Facebook account like you? because of its well-organized picture section and the ability to tag people and have people tag themselves, Facebook definitely is the winner! Also, with the applications recently released you can now add Flickr and other photosharing site streams to your profile. However, Fox now owns Photobucket, which provides photo hosting to MySpace users.
Videos: This one is a tie because both MySpace and Facebook let you upload video and they both have their own flash player. MySpace will let you embed video into your profile but you can post videos to Facebook as well.
Music: MySpace wins. Most band owns a MySpace account and fan page. However, with the new Facebook apps you can add your data from music tracking sites like Last.fm and iLike: in fact the top application on Facebook at the moment is the iLike app.
Sharing: Now, Facebook’s advantage here is only a slight one. Facebook allows you to share media links very easily and i fact automatically though the Facebook feed, something that I’m sure many MySpace users would like to be able to do (MySpace News isn’t really suited to this). You can, however, grab embedded media like videos from other profiles to repost on MySpace.
Round Winner: Facebook!!

Round 3: Community

Relationships: I have to say Facebook did a very good job in building and gaining back relationship. With a click on your mouse, you can easily find your long lost friends back in high school or you can even indicate how you know a person. Even all mothers can easily check whether their son is dating a girl or not. *Worried!* while the features for MySpace in this segment is kinda limited.

Groups: Both sites have groups, but Facebook makes them more prominent. They are a bigger part of the service and there are a lot of people using them for clever uses like planning meet up and giving info to fans.
Keeping Track of What’s New: Facebook kills MySpace here. On MySpace the only way to know if a friend added something new to their profile is to go look at it, and the only way to know if you made a new friends is to look for the person. Facebook has two feeds. One tells you what’s new with you, like who accepted your friend request or your posted items, etc. The other feed tells you what’s up with all your friends, like who they added and what groups they joined.
Messaging: This is a tie. They both have a place where people can leave messages on your profile and they both have a basic mail system.
Co-Workers: Facebook can be used as a tool to talk to the people you work with also and see what’s new with them. You can even join a network for your company. MySpace was really designed for teens so it doesn’t really have these types of features.
Round Winner: Still... Facebook! *Applauses*
Summary for part 1 of Facebook versus MySpace: Looks like Facebook dominated the first part of the competition. Eventhough MySpace has the most members but it might not be the top rated Social Networking Sites. So based on the first 3 rounds, do you agree that facebook is better than MySpace? Tell me about it...
For more hyped up competitions between Tom and Mark, stay tune for next week's Facebook Vs MySpace Part 2. Ciao!

Pros and Cons.

Link to us : http://snipurl.com/u4g5x

Social networking is the current sensation between everyone of all ages over the world. The Internet helps it come alive and connects us; anywhere and wherever we are. It brings a large scale of people together to interact at any given time, regardless of various time zones.

Such an amazing fact, don't you think?

Today I'd be venturing on the basic ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of a social networking site.

Photobucket

(image obtained from http://www.deviantart.com/)

First and foremost, I'd like to start with the ADVANTAGES on using a social networking site.

LOW COST ; Using a social networking site is much cheaper compared to arranging meetings amongst friends and hosting a party by inviting guests through a networking site, for example Facebook and Myspace to name a few. This most clearly justifies the popularity of the site as it makes something that usually is so hard to plan, fast and simple and very cheap. Amazingly for a big company or business, they can use it to scout other businesses on their target audiences and market share which could lead into future partnership, and at a very low price.

BUILDS CREDIBILITY ; It helps a company gain confidence from their client as they get to know the target audience daily routine that could help the business sell the product in a more specific manner. As long as the company doesn't be aggressive with their building interest of the client.

CONNECTIONS ; Everyone and anyone are able to connect through a social networking site. This leads to friendships being formed from across the continent or even next door neighbours. Making friends is easy but keeping the friendship is a challenge, teaches you to play your cards right. As the saying goes, 'it's a small world'.

Where as the DISADVANTAGES on using a social networking site are as such;

LACK OF ANONYMITY ; There are many irresponsible teenagers out there that give out their personal details on various social networking sites that may lead unnecessary disturbance to occur into their private lives. Unaware of the dangerous things that could happen if the person on the other side isn't who it's supposed to be.

SCAMS AND HARASSMENT ; A social networking site could get hacked into, not every secured location can be reliable. It could disrupt security in both a personal and business context.

TIME CONSUMING ; Certain people don't enjoy clicking around a social networking site all day. Although having a social networking site is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, some group of people just see it as a waste of time.

As you've seen above, I've listed down the advantages and disadvantages, the pros and cons of these social networking sites that is vastly growing in today's society. I advice my fellow friend to take a moment and ponder on these valuable intake of information that could save you a hassle in the future.

That's all from me, for now.

Social? Network?

Link to us : http://snipurl.com/u4g4z

Photobucket
(image obtained from http://www.deviantart.com/)

Do you social with people? Yes! you did.

Do you online? Yes! of course!
But what are Social Networking Sites?
To explain in a simple way, social networking sites are web pages that facilitate for friendly and active interaction among members. Most social networks are Internet based and aim to provide various and interesting means on how users can interact. Such features may include instant messaging, video calling, chat, file sharing, discussion groups, voice chats, emails, blogging and so on. If you are currently a user of Myspace, Facebook or Friendster, you know exactly how social network sites work. Especially Facebook! Who does not has one Facebook account, you better create one now.

The Internet is becoming part of our life. The broad coverage of networking draws us closer with everyone around the world. There are no boundaries and no longer strangers exist in our social circle especially comes to networking! Social Networking Sites becoming so popular until all the online users are actively updating at least 12 hours everyday. Through this, we are engaging to everyone, our classmates, old-schoolmates, family etc.

Social networks work by collecting profiles of members. The information or data would be openly publicized to who may have the similar interests or who are searching such profiles. It would be interesting to rate which social networking sites have the most number of members. According to one of the research I’ve found online; currently, MySpace is leading the line with an unparalleled 200 million users or members worldwide. At far second place is blogging Website. Other leaders based on traffic and membership volume rankings include Orkut, Friendster, Facebook, Bebo and Tagged.com.
Photobucket

(image obtained from http://www.deviantart.com/)

Though most of these social networking sites are open for everybody, my advice to all the users is to act accordingly to online ethics to avoid any unnecessary privacy invasion. Anyhow, we are here in a new decade. Today in 2010, why not create an account to your favorite social network sites now and interact with real people.
